UPI Fraud in India: 5 Scams and How to Protect Your Money

UPI makes paying friends, shopping and settling bills easy. But scammers exploit payment requests, fake QR codes and impersonation to trick people into sending money.

The good news? A few simple habits can help you avoid many common UPI scams.

5 Common UPI Scams to Watch For

1. Fake payment requests

A stranger claims they are sending you money and asks you to approve a UPI request. Check the screen carefully: approving a payment request and entering your PIN can send money out of your account.

2. Fake QR codes

Someone says you must scan a QR code to receive a refund, prize or payment. Remember: scanning a QR code and entering your UPI PIN can authorise a payment. You do not need to enter your PIN to receive money.

3. Fake customer care calls

A caller pretends to represent your bank, a payment app or a government department and asks for your PIN, OTP or account details. Never share these credentials with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

4. Screen-sharing app scams

A fraudster asks you to install an app to process a refund or fix a payment problem. The app may expose your screen or help the scammer manipulate you into authorising transactions. Never install remote-access tools at an unsolicited caller's request.

5. Fake payment screenshots

A buyer shows you a screenshot claiming payment has been completed. The image may be fake. Always check your own UPI app or bank account to confirm that the money has arrived.

5 Rules to Keep Your UPI Account Safe

  • Never share your UPI PIN or OTP with anyone.

  • Check the recipient's name and amount before approving a payment.

  • Never enter your PIN to receive money.

  • Avoid unknown links and QR codes promising refunds, rewards or cashback.

  • Use only official apps and support channels when resolving payment issues.

What If You Lose Money to UPI Fraud?

Act quickly:

  1. Contact your bank or payment app through its official support channel and report the transaction.

  2. Call India's cyber financial fraud helpline at 1930 as soon as possible.

  3. Submit a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.

  4. Save transaction IDs, screenshots, messages and other relevant evidence.

Quick reporting may help authorities and banks respond, but recovery is not guaranteed. The outcome depends on the circumstances and applicable rules.

The Bottom Line

UPI is designed with security protections, but scammers often exploit trust and confusion rather than breaking the payment system itself.

Remember one golden rule: your UPI PIN is used to authorise payments—not to receive money.
